Alona Versinina and Carl Groome at the Jack Crawford 10k in Shettleston

The week was blessed with the first week of spring and it helped the athletics with warmer and more pleasant weather.
Four Wesham members ran in the Trimpell 10-Mile race on Sunday in Morecambe and Lancaster and up the Lune valley, with Jamie Houghton posting an impressive debut time of 2:16:32 for 55th place. Tom Crabtree finished 85th in 2:22:18 with Rob Wallace 207th with 2:47:43. Stuart Mulrooney placed 236th in 2:56:4. There were 417 runners in this popular race, a good opportunity for a long run in any marathon preparation. There were 11 runners in the accompanying 10k race.

In the New Longton 10k last week, ian Nicholls Hogg finished 46th in 42:56. Sue Coulthurst was 5th woman and first W55 in 43:32 in 50th place overall. Peter Rooney was 5th M65 and 157th in 55:19. Dawn Biggs came in not far behind in 6th W55 and 50th woman with 56:11, 162nd overall. Mary Lois Cortes finished 96th woman and 233rd overall in 1:13:59. The winning time was 33:05 with 30 runners under the 40-minute mark.

Carl Groome and Alona Versinina took the opportunity of their visit to Glasgow for the Victoria parkrun of staying over for Shettleston Harriers’ Jack Crawford 10k on the Sunday from Bishopbriggs along the Forth and Clyde Canal. Carl finished 39th and 5th M50 in a time of 41:31 with Alona securing a new personal best time of 55:26 for 47th woman and 150th overall.

Veronica Scott ran the Chester 10k from the Racecourse through the city, finishing 2287 female in 1:17:18 for 5454th overall, with a chip time of 1:14:43 for 2411th. She was 115th W55.

The Lancashire Senior Men’s 9-man team brough home the bronze medals from the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships in Nottingham at the weekend, with the 6-man team placing 6th. The Lancashire Senior Women were equally successful for bronze with six of their nine ladies in the scoring team.

Thirty-eight Wesham members took part in 12 parkrun events on Saturday at 9am. Tracey Hulme took to her regular haunt at the South Manchester run in Platt Fields to record her time of 25:27. There were 8 members in the Preston parkrun in Avenham and Miller Park, with the fastest time ex-member Rob Danson 16:33 as he makes a return. Steve Myerscough clocked 20:48 with Nigel Shepherd running 21:46. John Naylor timed in at 23:49, with Vicky Gore 25:15, Des Cleary 25:56, Rob Danson senior 28:04, Andy Moore 28:14 and Paul Carter 30:46. Michelle Pitt ran the Hyndburn parkrun in 44:20 and Emma Wright the York run at the Racecourse in 30:39. Martin Bates was in Worsley Woods in Swinton to record 31:14, while there were five members at the Victoria run in Glasgow where Carl Groome returned 20:17, Mike Eyre 23:07, Alona Versinina 26:52, Helen Eyre 31:07 and Sue Rigby 34:17. Emma Brook ran the Penrith parkrun in 28:21 and Anne Berry was further west in Fitz Park in Keswick to record 30:53. There were ten members at Lytham Hall, where Ian Nichols Hogg clocked 23:18, Jonathan Lawson 23:53, Natalie Middlemas 24:30, Alan Edgar 25:39, Bev and Adam Wilding 27:08, Peter Rooney 27:44, Carly Edgar 30:41, Martin Allison 37:57, and Philip Leaver 58:43. Up the road in the Blackpool parkrun in Stanley Park Dan Bolton ran the fastest time of 17:25 while David Taylor was 4th in 18:17, Jamie Houghton 11th with 19:33, Dan Eyre 12th in 19:57, Jonny Heathcote 15th with 20:25, and Lee Barlow on 22:41. Dave Young ran along the Fleetwood Promenade in 28:40 with Alex Rowe on a moderate walk for 47:19. In the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton Bradley Flatt was 18th fastest in 21:16.
