The Inter-Club series drew to a close on Wednesday this week in Worden Park in Leyland hosted by Red Rose over a measured 4-mile course. Wesham again were second team overall, which gives them a great year. The ladies were sixth team with the Ladies W40 placing 5th. The overall Veterans were third with the Over-50s and Over-60s both in third place. Full results and a report next week.
Martin Bates continued his series of seven races in seven days on Monday with a run in the Monton 5-Mile in Ellesmere Park near Eccles where he clocked 41:29 for 179th place overall and 4th M65 in this popular event of 470 runners. The race was won in 24:39 by Thomas Charles of Chorlton Runners. On Tuesday he was in Littleborough for the Lions 5k around Hollingworth Reservoir where he finished 53rd in 25:57 coming in 7th M65. Wednesday saw him at the Holcombe Two Towers Fell Race north of Bury for a run of 4 miles and 1312ft climb, where he finished 161st in 1:22:43 for 21st Over-60. On Thursday he finished his streak at the Salford Media City 5k with Mick Edge, Bradley Flatt and Tom Nicholson where he ran 25:56 for 73rd position and 2nd M65. Mik Edge was 56th in 24:11 (21:52 chip time) for 1st M60. Brdley Flatt ran the 10km race to finish 31st in the 10km in 41:07 (40:23 chip time) with Tom Nicholson who was 202nd in 56:31 for 53:32 chip time.
There was a small Wesham team at the Pendelton Fell Race last week as the club Trail and Fell Running Championship draws to a close. Over 5 miles and 1500ft ascent up and around the Nick O’ Pendle Steve Myerscough finished 56th in 54:56 for 18th Over-50. John Collier placed 82nd and 5th Over-70 with 61:46 and Jamesm Danson was 91st in 64:39, 24th Over-50.
Alek Walker was the only Wesham member in this year’s Garstang Half Marathon, running 1:31:36 to come in 13th in a field of 122 runners.
Finlay McCalman was the only Wesham member to clock a time in the Blackpool Night Run 2 last week where he clocked 38:58 for the 7.5km coming in 292nd.
Mick Edge completed the West Lancashire Triathlon at the Edge Hill University in Ormskirk to put his demons at bay after an event in April where he swam 40m too far, went out the wrong way on a borrowed bike after his own had been disqualified. He swam 7:06 for the 400m pool swim and pedalled 41:20 for the 13.33-mile circuit through Scarth Hill and Westhead, finishing up on the 2.95 mile run with a time of 21:55, giving him a total of 1:14:43 with 4:22 spent in transition. The total distance of the event was 16 miles, and Mick continues his training for his GB representation in Spain later this year.
